Building a Second Brain · Structure reference

Personal Brain Structure

What my personal second brain actually looks like on disk: one numbered PARA-style vault, enumerated page by page and redacted for publication.

Jensen Loke · · snapshot · ~5 min read

This is a dated structural snapshot of the personal brain described in The Last Project You Build Alone and Two Brains, One Operator. Folder contents are genericized; page counts are real, enumerated over MCP on 30 September 2026. The company half has its own structure reference.

Vital stats

Counted by listing every slug in the source, not estimated.

954pages total
664real pages
290alias stubs
3,250graph links
1,019timeline entries
31page types

One engine indexes the vault; 1,969 chunks are embedded, 968 tags are in use. The enumeration returned 953 unique slugs while the engine reported 954 pages - a one-row listing discrepancy I recorded rather than smoothed over. Alias stubs are excluded from every “real page” figure; what they are is worth its own section below.

The tree

Numbered roots, PARA-style. Counts are pages, including index pages.

What each root is for

00–02 · Capture flow

Dashboards, one append-here Inbox, dated daily summaries. Human writes; the agent files.

10-domains · Life areas

Ongoing responsibilities with no end date: work, family, home, health, finance, learning, travel, career.

20-projects · Engagements

Time-boxed work under clients/<client>, personal/, infra/, completed/. “Active” is a frontmatter status, never a folder.

30-knowledge · Reference

Entities filed by kind: people, companies, concepts, places, devices, agents, investments, meetings, research, runbooks, sources.

40-outputs · Artefacts

Generated reports and slides. The archived agent-ops dailies stay in place; that series is retired.

50-portfolio · Published

Mirrors this website 1:1 — one site entry corresponds to one canonical brain page.

90-system · Rules

Policies, agent skills and their overrides, templates, indexes, and the state-of-the-brain page agents read before filing anything.

Flat roots · Dissolved

Loose roots like people/, concepts/, originals/, inbox/ were folded into the numbered roots in a restructure. They survive as redirects and capture residue.

Filing rule

Every page goes by primary subject, not by format or by where it came from. A PDF is not “sources material”; an email is not “inbox material”. Unsure → dated page in 01-inbox/, never a new top-level root.

How to read it without misreading it

Alias stubs are a feature. Every move in the restructure left a type: alias page at the old slug so existing wikilinks and page reads still resolve. 290 of 954 pages are stubs; indexes exclude them with type != "alias". It was a deliberate decision to keep them: nothing was deleted, and the graph stayed whole through a 139-page move.

Company knowledge is stubbed, not stored. The company-product pointer pages are references, not copies. Canonical company product, engineering, and support knowledge lives in the separate company brain. Two brains, no fallback, no dual-write - the boundary argued in Two Brains, One Operator.

Two residues are open, and the tree says so. A batch of dated hash-slugged notes from a server-side capture tool (since banned client-side), and one live page stranded on a dissolved root. Both are tracked in the brain’s own tuning backlog. Publishing the imperfections is the point: a structure page that hides its residue is marketing, not a snapshot.

Remote-only by policy. The vault lives on an external volume on a dedicated host, git-backed, and is reached through MCP only. Client devices do not run a local store, and every write is confirmed by a write-through receipt under that volume path plus a full read-back.
